ABOUT GUSS
Guss, pronounced gōōs. Wood-fired sauna at the river. Hats made by hand. People who show up.
It's wood-fired. Every log carried by hand and put on the flames. The sauna takes its time getting hot. So you take your time too. Forty-five minutes on the bench. Three rounds. Water on the rocks. You walk in carrying whatever's been on your mind. Most of it doesn't make it back out with you. We've seen it happen a thousand times.
We run. We hike. We meditate. We do yoga. Whatever moves the body. Whatever moves the breath. Then back to heat. Then plunge. Then heat again. Movement is how we earn the heat. The heat is how we earn the rest. That's most of what this is.
Geese fly together. So do we. The sauna was never a solo practice. It's sitting together on the bench and conversations and shared silence at the edge of too-hot. Strangers say hi on the dock before a plunge. Friends see each other on cold Sundays they wouldn't otherwise have plans. Someone always says, “You've got this,” before the jump into the water. Somehow it always feels true.
Something happens when you do this. Heat loosens the body. Cold resets the head. The people on the bench around you lift the rest. We don't promise revelation. Just that you'll feel something real on the other side. And sometimes that you'll laugh. That's lift.
